beholdthevoidCANON CHARACTER INFORMATIONCharacter Name: Locke Cole
Canon: Final Fantasy VI
Backstory: Wiki LinkPersonality: Locke, outwardly, is confident and quite competent. A self-proclaimed “treasure hunter,” he is quite fond of adventuring and finding new and exciting things and/or liberating them from an undeserving owner. He is quite sensitive about his occupation, calling Locke a thief is grounds for physical violence.
Locke has a good sense of humor and a penchant for banter, usually at his friend Edgar, the King of Figaro's expense. In addition, he is eager to protect and while he might have some… unsavory hobbies, he is always willing to step up and help someone, especially young, supposedly defenseless women. This may outwardly appear to be something of the mark of a womanizer, but that’s Edgar’s thing. Locke carries the deep guilt of having lost his girlfriend, Rachel. She became amnesiac after protecting him from a bridge collapse and, with influence from her family who did not approve of Locke and blamed him, drove him away. He later returned to find out she had died in an Imperial attack, having regained her memories just before her death and uttering his name.
The attack is what caused Locke to turn against the Empire and join the Returners. In addition, he commissioned an herbalist to preserve Rachel’s body. Locke is absolutely driven to find a way to return her soul to her body and bring her back. This guilt causes him to want to protect others from the same circumstances and his treasure hunting, which was before a way of life, is now a driving goal in his life.
Deep down, Locke carries a lot of guilt with him. While it isn't readily apparent, Locke has a lot of triggers that will cause an immediate and very predictable response. When it comes to the Empire? Anger and opposition. Someone who needs protection? Immediate assistance. While he appears open, Locke's heart is closed. His world stopped when Rachel died, and the only thing he has is his vendetta against the Empire and his quest for some power that can bring Rachel back to him.
This guilt is eased after the acquisition of the Phoenix magicite. In his attempts to resurrect Rachael, while he is not ultimately successful he is given a brief moment to speak with Rachael and be forgiven. This allows him to once again open his heart, moving on from that horrible period that has in many ways kept him in stasis, stunting his personal emotional growth and ability to connect with others on a deeper, more meaningful level.
AU INFORMATIONAU Character Name: Colin Locke
AU Backstory: Locke grew up more or less a normal kid in San Diego, California. In his teens he developed an interest in breaking into old, abandoned buildings and exploring. He also found himself in a passionate young romance with a local girl from school named Rachael.
Tragedy struck when Rachael was killed during a routine traffic stop by a police officer. The officer was completely acquitted of all wrongdoing in her death, which ignited a furious response from Locke who lead his first protest, holding pictures of Rachael and screaming for justice. This earned him some definite notice and created quite the local scandal, Rachael's grieving parents being horrified by the display and what they saw as a use of their dead daughter as a political chip. Locke became quite the controversial figure in the community, and upon graduation decided to head to UCLA for a fresh start. He's since learned and while he is still an active protester he doesn't use Rachael's face anymore.
Locke first awakened his Persona by being drawn into the Palace of a cop who pepper sprayed him in the face, knocked him over and kicked him several times in the ribs during a protest, breaking two of them. The officer saw no disciplinary action (Locke ended up incarcerated that night although no charges were officially filed). His anger lead him to the officer's palace, where he was able to change his heart. The officer retired in shame, although the department more or less covered up his reasoning.
Currently, he's studying Political Science and helping with the Phantom Thieves, where he feels he is finally able to influence the change he's craved.
AU Personality Deviation: Locke is much less a treasure hunter than in canon, while he likes to explore abandoned buildings and will sometimes take interesting things he is less liberal with other people's possessions, he's actually honestly not a thief in this setting as opposed to just insisting to not be one while totally still being one. His rebellion against the government in this case takes the form of active and vocal protests but he is still generally pretty law-abiding despite his utter disdain for the police. Most of the time. He generally favors the non-violent resistance method but is willing to commit more minor infractions such as stopping traffic to make a point.
